A brief history of Ayahuasca
Ayahuasca is a Quechua term meaning “vine of the souls,” and is a psychedelic brew indigenous to populations of the Amazon Basis. The beverage is prepared by boiling or soaking the bark and stems of Banisteriopsis caapi together with various admixture plants such as P. viridi or Diplopterys cabrerana. While the caapi vine contains an MAO inhibitor, the admixtures contain the potent short-acting psychoactive agents N,N-dimethyltryptamine and 5-MeO-DMT. DMT which is not orally active when ingested by itself but can be rendered orally active in the presence of the peripheral MAO inhibitor. This interaction is the basis of the psychotropic action of ayahuasca. It is widely believed that indigenous Amazonian people have been using ayahuasca for about 5000 years.

More about traditional use of Amazonian rites and rituals
Technically, the term ayahuasca refers to the vine, Banisteriopsis caapi however, this plant is always brewed in conjunction with DMT containing plants such as Psychotria viridis. Various other plants are often added to the mixture as well depending on the shaman and the nature of the ceremony. In 1969 a chemical analysis was carried out on the caapi vine and it was shown to contain three active chemicals, harmine, harmiline, and d-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroharmine. The beta-carboline chemicals like harmine found in the B. caapi vine can be psychedelic, but only in toxic doses (McKenna, 1993). P. viridis (chakruna) was later discovered to be a common admixture to the ayahuasca. Chakruna contains significant amounts of the potent hallucinogen N, N- dimethyltryptamine or DMT. DMT containing plants are inactive when taken orally because of an enzyme in the body called Monoamine oxidase which breaks down neurotransmitters in the brain in the effort to keep the brain’s chemistry balanced. However, because harmine inhibits this enzyme for a period of time, the DMT becomes orally active. Put simply, the B. caapi vine allows the psychedelic DMT to make its way to the brain when they are taken together.
Shamans and ceremony
Traditionally, the shaman or curandero plays a very important role in the ayahuasca ceremony. The shamans’ job is to first seal the space thereby creatinga protected circle. He then journeys into the spirit world, or non-ordinary reality, getting advice and powers to maintain the balance between the natural and supernatural (Harner, 1982). Journeys into non-ordinary realities can be extremely intense, frightening, confusing, and dangerous. The shamans job is to help others with their journey and protect them from invasive energies. The shaman will create a safe setting by altering his or her consciousness and guiding the session through the singing of indigenous songs called ikaros. Many people find the curandero to be an essential part of ayahuasca ceremonies.
The chemicals; Aya vs. DMT
The tryptamines, N,N-Dimethyltryptamine and 5-MeO-DMT were first synthesized only decades ago and the only serious studies on these molecules since were carried out by Rick Strassman between 1990-1995. In his book, The Spirit Molecule (2000), Strassman describes studies in which about half of the volunteers during a DMT trip entered freestanding, independent levels of existence and had profound encounters/interactions with non-human beings , “entities”, “aliens”, “guides” and “helpers”. According to Strassman’s work, they take the form of “clowns, reptiles, mantises, bees, spiders, cacti and stick figures.” Terrence McKenna famously called the non-stable entities he encountered “machine elves”. Reports of these kinds of beings seem to be unique to DMT trips.
In 1969 a chemical analysis was carried out on the caapi vine which is the catylist for activating the DMT in indigenous ayahuasca brews. It was shown to contain three active chemicals, harmine, harmiline, and d-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroharmine. The beta-carboline chemicals like harmine found in the B. caapi vine can be psychedelic, but only in toxic doses (McKenna, 1993). P. viridis (chacruna), a plant with high concentrations of DMT was later discovered to be a common admixture to the ayahuasca. N,N-Dimethyltryptamine, or DMT is a naturally occurring chemical found in both plants and animals. The psychedelic threshold for N,N-DMT is only about 0.2 mg/kg. DMT in its pure crystalline form can be smoked or intravenously injected as well as eaten. When smoked or injected the effects are felt almost immediately and completely subside after about 20 minutes. In small doses it often produces rapidly moving kaleidoscopic displays of intensely “techno-colored” abstract images that have such a transience about them that they feel as if they never exist. In larger doses, it produces a powerful but short-lasting entheogenic state of mind that is possibly the most intense psychedelic experiences in existence.
5-MeO-DMT is a similar molecule with similar effects to N,N-DM and both tend to be present in plants that contain large amounts of tryptamines such as P. viridis, M. hostils, and D. cabrerana. While N,N-DMT reports tend to be full of strange new worlds, a powerful sense of presence and even transdimensional aliens, Strong 5Meo-DMT experiences can bring explorers into a state of non-duality. The (non)experiences of 5Meo-DMT are described as being in the Godhead. The center of nothing and everything, a singularity where nothing exists and yet is the (non)place from which everything is born.

Ayahuasca almost always contains both N,N-DMT and 5-Meo-DMT as well as traces of various other tryptamines. Contrary to the effects of smoking pure DMT crystals, the DMT in ayahuasca is absorbed into the body slowly and lasts much longer, 4-8 hours. Although reminiscent of straight N,N-DMT and 5-Meo-DMT, the various other plants involved tend to work together to create a different experience altogether. ‘Mother Aya’ as she has become known dominates most peoples experiences exposing them to themselves including all that has been lost or pushed down deep inside. The experiences are often very difficult for many people but the relief that comes from confronting oneself is almost always unanimously considered life changing. That being said, Mother Aya although very loving, is nevertheless an extremely powerful force that should be respected before, during and after all ayahuasca ceremonies.
